Getting to the Ambassador Theatre, Dublin by Luas, bus or on foot
By The MyCritik editorial team · information checked on 15 October 2026 · 3 min read
You can't miss it: the old building on the corner where O'Connell Street hits Parnell Street, a few steps from the Parnell Monument. Built in 1764 as the assembly rooms of the Rotunda Hospital, it spent 45 years as the Ambassador Cinema, and since late 2024 MCD has been filling it with comedy and gigs again. Getting there is the easy bit. It sits at the top of O'Connell Street, so the Luas, city buses and airport coaches all stop within a few minutes of the door.
Luas Green Line: Parnell and O'Connell Upper
The Green Line runs a one-way loop through the city centre, so the stop you use depends on your direction:
- Parnell, on Parnell Street between O'Connell Street and Marlborough Street, is right by the venue. Trams heading back south towards Trinity, St Stephen's Green and Brides Glen leave from here, so it is your stop for home.
- O'Connell Upper is the stop for arriving from the south: trams going north up O'Connell Street stop there, a two-minute walk from the door.
- From the Red Line, get off at Abbey Street and walk up O'Connell Street, about ten minutes.
Luas hours, as published for city-centre services, are roughly 05:30 to 00:30 Monday to Friday, 06:30 to 00:30 on Saturday and 07:00 to 23:30 on Sundays and bank holidays. Shows here usually end well before that, but on a Sunday check luas.ie for the last tram.
Buses and airport coaches
O'Connell Street is the spine of the Dublin Bus network, and most cross-city routes stop within five minutes of the Ambassador. Use the TFI Live app to find the nearest stop for your route.
Flying in for a show? Dublin Express routes 782 and 784 to and from the airport use stops on O'Connell Street or Parnell Square, metres from the venue. Check dublinexpress.ie for the last coach back to the airport.
Walking and step-free access
From O'Connell Bridge it is a straight ten-minute walk up O'Connell Street, past the GPO and the Spire. Coming from Temple Bar or Grafton Street, allow 15 to 20 minutes.
The venue's ticketing listing says the Ambassador is fully wheelchair accessible, and that wheelchair users can book general admission tickets on Ticketmaster and will be looked after on arrival. Luas trams and stops are step-free. If you have tickets to collect, the box office at the venue hands them out on the night only, so leave time for it.
Driving in anyway? Some city car parks shut before the encore: read parking at the Ambassador Theatre first. For dinner beforehand, see where to eat near the Ambassador, and to choose between stalls and balcony, the best seats at the Ambassador.
