Frequently asked questions

How can I tell whether a comedy show is worth it?

Read the reviews from recent dates of the tour and look above all at the “Material” and “Originality” criteria: they show whether the show holds up beyond a few well-known bits. The comments also tell you who the show is aimed at.

What is the difference between stand-up and a character show?

Stand-up is usually performed straight to the audience, mic in hand, with no set or characters, talking directly to the room. A character or sketch show is often more scripted and staged, with characters and sketches. Many comedians mix the two, and the reviews tell you what to expect.

Should I repeat the jokes in a review?

Best not: a punchline given away loses its effect for future audiences. Describe the tone, the topics, the pace and the atmosphere in the room instead. A useful review says who will enjoy the show, without spoiling it.

Can a comedian reply to reviews of their show?

Yes, an artist who has claimed their page can post an official reply under a review, marked with a badge when their page is verified. However, they cannot rate their own show: that is a conflict of interest, and a ground for removal under the review policy.

Can I rate a comedian without creating an account?

Yes. On the write a review page, find the show and the date, then rate it: the review is signed “An audience member” with the label “No account” and counts towards the average. You can edit or delete it later from the same browser.
