Getting to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre by Luas, DART or bus

You can't miss it. Daniel Libeskind's glass front leans over Grand Canal Square, and the red "carpet" of the square runs right up to the doors. The theatre opened in 2010 as the Grand Canal Theatre and took its current name in 2012. It sits at the far end of the Docklands, so give yourself 15 minutes more than you think from O'Connell Street.
Luas: Red Line to Mayor Square
There is no Luas stop on the square itself. Take the Red Line towards The Point and get off at Mayor Square - NCI, on the north quays. From there it's about 10 minutes on foot: cross the Samuel Beckett Bridge, the white harp-shaped one, and keep going south to the square.
- From Heuston: the Red Line stop is just outside the station. Take a tram terminating at The Point.
- From Connolly: walk over to the Busáras stop and take the Red Line east.
Going home, the Luas FAQ gives the last Red Line tram from The Point at around 00:30 Monday to Saturday and around 23:30 on Sundays. Most shows finish well before, but on a Sunday with a long musical, check on luas.ie before curtain up.
DART and train
Two stations, both about 10 minutes away:
- Grand Canal Dock if you're coming from the south (Bray, Dún Laoghaire, Sandymount).
- Pearse if you're coming from the north side (Howth, Malahide, Connolly).
Connolly itself is about a 20-minute walk, so from an intercity train the Luas or a DART hop to Pearse saves your legs. Check the last DART on irishrail.ie for the night you go.
Bus
The closest stop is Grand Canal Dock, within 10 minutes' walk, served by:
- 1, 47, 56a, 77a, P29, 52
- the C-spine routes C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6
Any bus to Westland Row / Pearse Station also works, with a 10-minute walk. The 151 serves the north Docklands: get off near the Convention Centre and walk about 15 minutes over the bridge.
Step-free access
The theatre has level entry and one large lift that serves every floor and fits a powered wheelchair plus a companion. The theatre says public transport to the door is wheelchair accessible. Book wheelchair spaces early through the Groups & Access team, who also handle captioned and audio-described nights.
If you have to drive, read our guide to parking at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre first: the theatre has no car park of its own. Arriving early? See where to eat near the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. And for picking a seat, our best seats guide covers the three levels.
