Where to eat before or after a show at the OVO Hydro (Glasgow)
By The MyCritik editorial team · information checked on 12 October 2026
The OVO Hydro has a great neighbour: Finnieston, just north of the Scottish Event Campus, is one of Glasgow's best-known food neighbourhoods. Along Argyle Street and the streets around it, you will find seafood restaurants, small plates, steak, cafés and traditional pubs, all within walking distance of the arena. On a show night, the problem is not finding somewhere good, but getting a table: book ahead.
Finnieston: the obvious choice
Glasgow Foodie's 2026 guide to Finnieston suggests, for a meal before a Hydro gig, depending on the time you have and your budget:
- Ox and Finch: small plates to share, one of the neighbourhood's best-known addresses;
- Ka Pao: lively South East Asian-inspired dishes to share, good for groups;
- Porter & Rye: steak and rich dishes in a dark, intimate setting;
- The Finnieston: seafood and oysters, with a strong drinks list;
- Crabshakk: one of Finnieston's best-known seafood restaurants;
- Derby Lane: a flexible all-rounder for a casual meal or a drink.
For a special occasion, the same guide recommends Unalome, a refined restaurant to book when you want to take your time: allow plenty of margin before the doors open. Dockyard Social, a street food and social dining venue, suits groups where everyone wants something different.
Drinks before or after the show
Finnieston is also known for its pubs and bars. Glasgow Foodie mentions Kelvingrove Café for cocktails, dinner and late drinks, as well as traditional pubs such as The Ben Nevis Bar, The Park Bar and The Islay Inn, good for a whisky or a pint. After the show, a drink in Finnieston is also a way to let the queues at Exhibition Centre station die down.
On the campus: Clydebuilt Bar & Kitchen
Inside the SEC Centre, at the SEC's East entrance, Clydebuilt Bar & Kitchen is the campus's own restaurant for pre-show dining. Its all-day menu focuses on Scottish produce, with vegetarian, plant-based and gluten-free options. The bar takes walk-ins for every event on a first come, first served basis, while the more intimate Kitchen area can be pre-booked for selected events. It stops serving before evening shows begin, so check the times on the SEC website. According to the SEC, Clydebuilt is also where people can wait during an event if they are not attending.
Eating inside the arena
On the ground floor of the Hydro, several bars serve beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks, and the Rocksalt and Big Grill outlets offer a street-food-style "Gig Food" menu. The venue also has contactless bars and self-service ordering kiosks. Hydro Club and VIP ticket holders have access to private restaurants and lounges.
Practical points:
- the SEC venues are cashless: card or contactless only;
- outside food and drink are generally not allowed, except for medical, religious or parental needs, to be arranged in advance with the SEC (customerexperience@sec.co.uk);
- tap water is free on request from all food and drink outlets;
- if you look under 25, you will need a photo driving licence or passport to buy alcohol.
Our tips for a show night
- Book in Finnieston, especially for Ox and Finch, Ka Pao, Crabshakk or Unalome: big shows fill the neighbourhood's tables.
- Check the door time, usually posted on the SEC event page two or three days before the show, and work backwards from it.
- Re-entry: the SEC usually allows you to leave and re-enter by scanning your ticket each time, but some events have a no pass-out policy. Check before planning to go back out.
