Comedy in London
Comedy clubs, Soho basements and arena tours: stand-up in London, rated by the audience.
There is a comedy night on somewhere in London every evening. The best-known club is The Comedy Store, which opened in Soho in 1979 and has been on Oxendon Street, between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, since 1993. Soho Theatre on Dean Street programmes stand-up and cabaret in its downstairs space, alongside new plays. Top Secret Comedy Club in Covent Garden is known for big names dropping in, while Angel Comedy, in Islington, runs shows every night of the week.
When comedians tour, the biggest names fill the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, a landmark for televised stand-up, and sometimes even The O2 arena. In early summer, many comics try out new material in London as work-in-progress shows before taking a finished hour to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August.
Audience reviews say what the posters don’t: how many laughs, how long the set was, and whether the support act was worth arriving early for. If your show is at the Apollo, read our guide to getting to the Eventim Apollo. For plays and musicals, see what’s on in London.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I see stand-up comedy in London?
Comedy clubs such as The Comedy Store, Soho Theatre’s downstairs space, Top Secret Comedy Club and Angel Comedy run shows most nights. Touring comedians play larger venues such as the Eventim Apollo and, for the very biggest names, The O2.
What is a work-in-progress comedy show?
It is a show where a comedian tests new material in front of an audience, often ahead of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe or a tour. Expect a looser, less polished set, with the comedian sometimes reading from notes.
How do I get to the Eventim Apollo?
The Eventim Apollo is on Queen Caroline Street, a few minutes’ walk from Hammersmith Tube stations, served by the District, Piccadilly, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. More details in our guide to getting to the Eventim Apollo.
