Getting to The Academy Dublin by Luas, bus, train or on foot
By The MyCritik editorial team · information checked on 15 October 2026 · 2 min read
You do not need directions to The Academy so much as a reminder to look up: it is on Middle Abbey Street, a minute from O'Connell Street, and the Luas Red Line runs right past the door. The building has four floors and three live rooms, the main room, the Green Room and Academy 2, so check which one is on your ticket before you join a queue.
Luas: both lines within three minutes
The Red Line runs along Abbey Street. Two stops bracket the venue:
- Abbey Street, on Lower Abbey Street just east of O'Connell Street, is the interchange with the Green Line.
- Jervis, on Upper Abbey Street in front of the Jervis Shopping Centre, is a couple of minutes west.
On the Green Line, coming from St Stephen's Green and the south, get off at O'Connell - GPO; coming from Broombridge and the north, get off at Marlborough. Together with Abbey Street they form one interchange, with signs on the platforms.
From Connolly, the Red Line takes two stops to Abbey Street. From Heuston, it runs straight along the quays to Jervis.
Last trams and night buses
The Luas runs until about 00:30 Monday to Saturday and about 23:30 on Sundays and bank holidays, according to times published for the Red Line. That covers a normal gig. It does not cover a club night upstairs, which can go on well past midnight. On Friday and Saturday nights, Nitelink buses run until about 04:00, and many Dublin Bus routes pass along O'Connell Street, two minutes away.
On foot and by taxi
From Temple Bar, cross the Ha'penny Bridge and walk up Liffey Street Lower to Abbey Street: about 5 minutes. From Grafton Street, allow 10 to 15 minutes via College Green and O'Connell Bridge.
Middle Abbey Street is narrow and shared with the trams, so do not ask a taxi to wait outside the door. Walk to O'Connell Street after the show: there is far more traffic and a better chance of a cab.
Step-free access
The venue says all three rooms are fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift for anyone who asks. Wheelchair users book a general admission ticket on Ticketmaster, then email the venue with the date and show so staff can look after them on the night. The Luas is step-free.
Driving is the hard option here: read parking at The Academy, because the nearest car park closes early. For food before the show, see where to eat near The Academy, and for where to stand, the best spots at The Academy.
