Getting to Whelan's, Wexford Street, by Luas, bus or on foot
By The MyCritik editorial team · information checked on 15 October 2026 · 2 min read
Wexford Street is only about 130 metres long, the bit between Aungier Street and Camden Street on the old road south out of the city. Whelan's is at number 25, and there has been a licensed premises on the site since 1772. Easy to find; the challenge is the pavement on a Friday, when the street's bars all fill at once.
On foot from the centre
From the top of Grafton Street, walk along the west side of St Stephen's Green, turn down Cuffe Street and then left onto Wexford Street: about 10 minutes. From Temple Bar or Dame Street, go up South Great George's Street and Aungier Street, which runs straight into Wexford Street: 10 to 15 minutes. If you come from Rathmines or Portobello, walk up Camden Street.
Luas Green Line
Two stops, both about 8 minutes on foot:
- Harcourt, on Harcourt Street, in front of the old Harcourt Street railway station. Walk west along Harcourt Road or through the side streets to Camden Street.
- St Stephen's Green, at the top of Grafton Street. Walk along Cuffe Street.
The Luas runs until about 00:30 Monday to Saturday and about 23:30 on Sundays and bank holidays, according to times published for the Red Line. Check the Green Line on luas.ie on the day.
By bus
Dublin Bus routes run along Aungier Street, Wexford Street and Camden Street, linking the street with the city centre, the northside and the southern suburbs. Routes changed with BusConnects, so use the TFI Journey Planner for the stop and number. On Friday and Saturday nights, Nitelink buses run until about 04:00.
Timing and getting home
Whelan's says doors are the time on your ticket, with music starting about 30 minutes later, and most shows run from about 20:30 to 22:45. Comedy starts 10 to 20 minutes after doors, so be on time. That leaves time for the last Luas, or a drink in the front bar.
Taxis are easiest to catch on Camden Street or at St Stephen's Green. Wexford Street is narrow and busy with buses, so do not try to get picked up at the door.
Whelan's publishes no access information online, and its Upstairs room and Parlour bar are on the upper floors, so contact the venue before booking if you need step-free access.
