Where to eat near King John's Castle, Limerick - riverside pubs
By The MyCritik editorial team · information checked on 15 October 2026 · 2 min read
The castle is at the top of the Medieval Quarter, and the best pubs around it look at it across the water. Pick one with a terrace on a dry evening and you watch the stage lights come up over the walls before you go in.

Right by the gate
Katie Daly's Heritage Pub & Kitchen, 12 Castle Street. Limerick's tourism site places it a stone's throw from the castle, with breakfast, lunch and dinner from 10am until late, seven days a week, after a big renovation. Pub food and a pint without crossing a bridge. Expect it to fill fast on gig nights.
Across the Shannon: the view
- The Curragower, Clancy Strand. Gastropub and restaurant whose terrace looks straight across at the castle. À la carte every day from 12 to 9, so an early dinner before doors works. Book.
- JJ Bowles, 8 Thomondgate, at the far end of Thomond Bridge. Widely called Limerick's oldest pub, Munster Pub of the Year at the 2024 Irish Restaurant Awards, with a revamped river terrace facing the castle. Good for a pint more than a meal.
Both are close to the 302 and 303 bus stop at Thomond Bridge, covered in getting to King John's Castle.
Down by George's Quay
- The Locke Bar, George's Quay. Gastropub with what it calls Limerick's biggest beer garden, on the river, and trad music and dancing every night. A short walk south of the castle, back towards the city centre.
- Locke Burger, 1 George's Quay, next door. Burgers, fries and wings, open seven days. The quick option.
The promoter's pub
Dolan's, 3-4 Dock Road, runs Live at the Castle and is Limerick's best-known music pub. It is on the far side of the city centre from the castle, so it works better for a late drink, or for checking what is on next, than for a quick pre-gig bite.
At the castle
The Siege Café inside the castle serves hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals, but it keeps the castle's visitor hours (9.30am to 6pm in summer). Nothing published says it opens for gigs, so plan to eat outside.
