The Grand Opera House on Great Victoria Street
The Grand Opera House on Great Victoria Street

Frank Matcham's 1895 theatre sits on Great Victoria Street, next door to the Europa Hotel and the Fitzwilliam. Getting here is the easy part: Belfast's main station is round the corner. The hard part is the security check at the door, so build in a few minutes.

Stops around Grand Opera House

Walking routes calculated with OpenStreetMap, for guidance only.

By train and bus: Grand Central

Belfast Grand Central opened in 2024 and replaced Great Victoria Street station as the city's main hub. It is 0.2 miles from the theatre via Glengall Street, the side street where the theatre has its stage door. Count on five minutes, less if you know the way.

Trains come in from the Bangor, Derry~Londonderry, Larne and Portadown lines, and the cross-border Enterprise runs to Dublin Connolly. Grand Central is also the main bus station, with services from across Northern Ireland.

Coming up from Dublin for a show? Check the last Enterprise home before you book, and compare it with the show's running time on the theatre's website. Dublin Express route 785 coaches also run from Grand Central to Dublin city and the airport, "until late evening" according to the operator.

From the city centre on foot

Great Victoria Street runs south from the City Hall end of town, and the theatre is a short, flat walk from Donegall Square. Buses and the Glider all converge on the City Hall area, so any Metro route into the centre will do. Check routes with Translink.

The Great Victoria Street area gets busy with roadworks and closures, and the theatre itself warns of possible traffic delays. Walking or the train beats a taxi stuck in a queue.

Doors, latecomers and bags

  • Doors open one hour before curtain up.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes before the time on your ticket. Latecomers may have to wait for a suitable break, sometimes the interval.
  • All bags are searched on arrival, and there is no cloakroom. Travel light.

Step-free access and drop-off

The foyer entrance on Great Victoria Street has automated doors and a step-free route to the Stalls. A new, larger lift serves all floors, and there is a hearing loop in the auditorium. If you are being dropped off, aim for a few minutes before the main arrival rush; car parks are listed in our parking at the Grand Opera House guide.
