The Grand Opera House on Great Victoria Street
The Grand Opera House on Great Victoria Street

Great Victoria Street is the best street in Belfast for a pre-theatre drink, and the reason is a few steps from the theatre: the Crown. Book dinner for 6pm, have one in the Crown afterwards, and you are in your seat with time to spare.

The pint first

  • The Crown Bar, 46 Great Victoria Street. The National Trust looks after it and calls it the most famous pub in Belfast: ornate tiling, carved ceilings, gas lamps and wooden snugs with their original bell system for calling staff. Grab a snug if one is free; before a big show, expect to stand.
  • Robinsons, 38-40 Great Victoria Street, right next to the Crown. Established in 1895, the same year as the theatre, with five venues under one roof: the Saloon, Fibbers, the Bistro serving food daily, a pool loft and a lounge.

Pre-theatre menus

  • The Causerie, in the Europa Hotel next door to the theatre. Its pre-theatre menu is two courses and a glass of wine for £30, served from 1pm to 6.30pm every day. You cannot be closer.
  • The Seahorse, on the second floor of the Grand Central Hotel, 9-15 Bedford Street, about five minutes' walk. Pre-theatre runs Wednesday to Saturday, 5pm to 6.30pm, with a 1pm to 3pm slot for Saturday matinees; two courses from £35. The most special-occasion option on this list.
  • Winnie's Cafe & Bar, at the Second Nature hotel, about five minutes away according to the theatre, which partners with the hotel. Use the code GRANDOPERA for 10% off a room if you are staying over.

Inside the theatre

The theatre has four bars, including the restored Grand Circle Bar. Before the show you can order a deli platter for two, cheese or charcuterie, which makes a light dinner if you are short of time.

The two tips that matter:

  • Order interval drinks before the show. On selected performances, you pay at any bar, take a number and collect at the interval. The interval lasts 15 or 20 minutes and the queues are long.
  • No drinks in the auditorium, unless you are in a box. Bars stop serving alcohol ten minutes before curtain up, and you cannot bring your own alcohol into the building.
