What’s on in Leeds
Arena gigs, opera, new plays and music hall comedy in Leeds, rated by the people who went.
Leeds packs a lot into a compact city centre. The Leeds Grand Theatre on New Briggate is the city’s main house for large touring musicals and the Leeds home of Opera North. A few minutes away on The Headrow, the City Varieties Music Hall is one of the oldest surviving music halls in the country, still hosting comedy, variety and live music. Leeds Playhouse, at Quarry Hill on the eastern side of the centre, produces its own plays, several of which have transferred to London or toured.
For the big tours, the first direct bank arena sits on the northern edge of the centre, about a 15-minute walk from Leeds station. Around it, the city’s independent music scene, from the Brudenell Social Club to the bars of the centre, keeps the gig calendar full all year.
